CAMPAIGN COVERAGE

A fellow named Bob Sumerby is convinced the mainstream news media are in cahoots to elect Republicans and savage Democrats, and he explains why every weekday in The Daily Howler. Somewhat more temperately, Brad DeLong, Professor of Economics at U.C Berkeley, and an economist named Dean Baker agree. To the contrary, the folks at Accuracy in Media are convinced that most news organizations are run by liberals. This dispute is a regular topic on the general political blogs including TAPPED and The Corner. See what you think.

THE ECONOMY

  • American Prospect Magazine's TAPPED
  • J. Bradford DeLong, University of California/Berkeley Professor and former Clinton White House economic official
  • National Review's The Corner
  • Gregory Mankiw, Harvard Professor and former Bush White House economic official

EDUCATION

The National Education Association favors more money for public schools, is dubious about the wisdom of the No Child Left Behind law, and opposes voucher plans for public schools. The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation largely disagrees

FOREIGN POLICY AND DEFENSE

On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Americans for Peace Now and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee represent two very different approaches from within the American Jewish community. For an Arab-American perspective, see the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

For information about the crisis in Darfur, see Human Rights Watch: Africa: Crisis in Darfur.

HEALTH CARE

These organizations and bloggers deal with issues other than health care, however health care is among the major concerns of all four.

IMMIGRATION

A subject often debated in the general blogosphere, the National Council of LaRaza explains why there should be more immigration, the Center for Immigration Studies explains why there should not

SECURITY AND CIVIL LIBERTIES

The American Civil Liberties Union takes the lead in fighting threats to free speech and the rights of the accused.

No one opposes civil liberties (or at least admits to so doing) but many conservatives contend the ACLU is selective in its interpretation of what constitutes civil liberties. Many conservatives also believe that the threat of terrorism requires re-examining the balance between liberty and security.

A conservative commentator on this issue is Ann Althouse. The case for strict adherence to Constitutional protections is nowhere more fiercely argued than by Glen Greenwald.

SOCIAL ISSUES

NARAL Pro-Choice America leads the fight for abortion rights and supports embryonic stem cell transplant research. The National Right to Life Committee opposes both.

The Human Rights Campaign lobbies for full equality, including the right to marry, for gays and lesbians.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State takes one side of the debate over the proper role of religion in America. The American Center for Law and Justice takes the other.
